A collection of trade cards. - In the late 1800's advanced industrial technology meant major reduction in the cost of printing and producing advertising. Trade cards were given away by shopkeepers with the purchase of a product. Consumers collected trade cards, accumulating them in scrapbooks or boxes. This collection of Newton, Mass. company cards was donated to the Newton Free Library - Text on verso: Mr. J. Edward Hills takes this opportunity to thank his friends for their generous patronage during the past two years, and also for the cordial encouragement extended him towards establishing a new and popular coal and wood business in this city. He takes pleasure also, in announcing the admission of Mr. George L. Bullens of Newton, as a partner in the business from this date, and hopes by a diligent attention to the wants of patrons, that the new firm may receive the same liberal support in the future, that has been extended him in the past.
