Description

A small group of men stand together on the ice on Lake Whittemore in Spencer, Massachusetts. A horse hitched to an ice groover stands in front in preparation to score the ice for cutting. Ice cutters would first scrap the snow off the ice and then plow it with an ice groover that cut lines into the ice about six inches deep. In the distance is the Moose Hill Mansion built by Rufus Sibley. To the right is Hobbs Ice House, the foundation of which can still be seen on Lake Street.
