JUBAL HOWE, whose thoughtful generosity we gratefully commem-

orate today, was born in Shrewsbury December 27, 1793, his parents

being DANtEL and HANNAH (HALL) HOWE. His great-grandfather,

Capt. DANIEL HOWE, was one of the earliest settlers in our town and

held the office of Town Treasurer for several years after its incorporation

in 1727. The father of Jubal Howe died in early life, leaving a large

family, Jubal being about twelve years of age and the third of 8 cbildren.

He was thus early obliged to seek a livelihood and while yet young

he is said to have learned the watch-making trade of that pioneer in

watch manufacture, LUTHER GODDARD of Shrewsbury. In 1821 we

find Mr. Howe working at his trade in Savannah, Ga., and in later

years he conducted a very successful jewelry business in Boston.

In 1830 Mr.Howe married ANN JEFFREY SUMNER, daugbter of

JOSEPH, and grand-daughter of Rev. JOSEPH SUMNER, D. D., who was

the second pastor of the Shrewsbury Church, 1762-1824. In 1835 he

built a residence in Newton, Mass., and there made his home until his

death, February 2, 1874.

Mr. Howe left by Will the bulk of his property in trust for the

comfort and support of his daughter, ANN JEFFREY HOWE, and at her

death, March 23, 1898, by the terms of rhe Will one thousand dollars

was paid to the Ministerial Fund of the Congregational Society, and the

residue to the Town of Shrewsbury, "for the purpose of establishing or

maintaining a Free Public Library in said town for the benefit of the

inhabitants thereof." The fund as received by the town in 1898 was

valued at about $38,000. In March, 1902, the fund was appraised at

$51,600, at which time the town voted to erect a Library Building with

a portion of this fund.
