Description
Redemption Rock Association members gathered to commemorate the release of Mary Rowlandson of Lancaster, Massachusetts in 1879. Mary Rowlandson was taken captive during King Philip's War on February 10, 1676 by the Narragansett Indians. After eleven weeks and five days of captivity she was ransomed for twenty pounds, raised by the women of Boston and paid by John Hoar of Concord at Redemption Rock near Mount Wachusett in Princeton, Massachusetts on May 2, 1676. Mary Rowlandson wrote a book on her experiences entitled, "A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson."
