Susan Preston Draper

  • – A portrait photograph of Susan Preston Draper, the second wife of General William F. Draper. They were married in 1890 and had one child, Margaret Preston Draper. Susan Preston Draper was the daughter of Major General William Preston of Kentucky and the sister of Jessie Preston Draper who married George Albert Draper. William Preston had been a Major General in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. This is perhaps the only case on record of a General of the Union Army marrying a daughter of a General of the Confederate Army.

Statue of General William F. Draper

  • – A photograph of the Statue of General William Franklin Draper located in Draper Park in the heart of Milford, Massachusetts. The statue shows General William F. Draper seated upon a horse. Both the park and the statue were presented to the town by his wife, Susan Preston Draper, in 1912, shortly after his death on Jan. 28, 1910. The statue was designed by Daniel Chester French, probably best known for his statue of Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial.

Draper enlisted in a local volunteer company, later Company B of the 25th Massachusetts regiment, that his father, George Draper, was instrumental in raising. William F. Draper was chosen second lieutenant although he was only a little over nineteen years old. He served for 4 years and was severely wounded in the battle of Wilderness, though he returned to the field later. He was made a brigadier-general for"gallant service during the war."Both regiments he was engaged with were"fighting regiments."The 25th Massachusetts had nearly seventy percent of their number wounded or killed at Cold Harbor, while the 36th Massachusetts, in the campaign beginning with the Wilderness, had every field and line officer, except one, killed or wounded.

General William F. Draper House

  • – A photograph of the General William F. Draper House in the winter, with snow whitening the ground and trees. The house stood on Adin street in Hopedale, Massachusetts on what is now the site of the Hopedale Junior/Senior High School. The land was donated to the town by his daughter, Margaret Preston Draper, with the stipulation that the school be named the General Draper High School for fifty years. The High School was completed in 1927.
