According to the caption on the back privates Galway, Kimball, Slate, Otis, and Williams are shown. Fort Warren was constructed on Georges Island at the entrance to the Boston Harbor between 1833-1861. The fort served as a prisoner-of-war camp during the Civil War and was permanently decommissioned in 1947.

Discharge was formalized on the July 22, 1899 due to the reason of business engagements. Enlistment terms in the Massachusetts Militia has varied over the years. During the 1890's enlistments were typically for three years. However, during time of war, the duration of enlistment was at the convenience of the Government, and after the Spanish-American War of 1898, many soldiers of the militia were discharged.
