From left is Healy's Tavern built c. 1810, the first Ammidown Block constructed c. 1828 (Tammany Hall). The original town meetinghouse, built in 1797-1800 is the third building, next is the original Baptist Church, built in 1848. Building five, in the background, is the Batchelder residence. On November 14, 1863, at 1:30 a.m., a fire destroyed all of these buildings.

Southbridge streetscape from north side of Main street from Universalist church to the Hartwell building
- – Streetscape of the north side of Main Street, Southbridge, looking west. Buildings that are depicted include, The First Universalist Church, on the corner of Hamilton Street; The Whitford building, the top floor of which was destroyed in a fire in the early 1970s; Hotel Newman, Goodwin's Clothing Store, Mathieu's Shoe Company, Costa Block and the Hartwell building, complete with balcony. The stores have canopies over the windows and doorways. The tree lined Main street is unpaved. Horse-drawn vehicles are on view at the hitching posts. A bollard on the corner of Central Street has a cover with a crest dated 1875.

Alden Block, Globe Village, Southbridge, Massachusetts
- – William E. Alden had this building constructed in Globe Village, on the west side of Southbridge, to accommodate his dry goods business. The view is of the Alden Block looking in a northeasterly direction. A large brick building with a granite foundation and a flat roof, is depicted. The plain block façade is relieved by decorative stone arches over the windows and by the well-defined corbel table at the cornice. There are retractable striped awnings for two windows and others use interior blinds. Over the main entrance is a decorative gable feature with the name Alden carved in stone. There is a sign hanging perpendicularly from the West Main Street side of the building with the name 'W.H. Bond Dentist' painted on it. On the west side of the building, over the entrance to the cellar, is another sign with the words"Ladies&Gents Restaurant Oysters". This structure is the only brick commercial block of this type in Globe Village. The street is unpaved. A carriage with a retractable canopy is in the foreground. A whiskey barrel is on view to the right. Groups of men are resting against the building. In 1892, J.J. Delehanty&Co. bought the Alden Block and transferred their house-furnishing business to this location. A renovation project was completed, in 2004 and a elevator shaft added. The building is owned by Debra and Peter DesForges - operating a multipurpose business complex.

Fire Department Elm Street Southbridge
- – View of the Southbridge Fire Department Headquarters on Elm Street, looking west. Architects on the project were: George Clemence; H. A. Haricot; Gilbert M Parks; and George L. Winter. A two-story brick construction with dormers and a bell tower, the building has Romanesque windows and doorways. Additions have been added in 1940 and 1961. Officially known as No. 1 Engine House, constructed in 1899 and inscribed on bell tower. According to"Southbridge: A Souvenir", published by the Ladies' Circle and YPCA of the First Universalist Society of Southbridge"The building for the Centre companies is in process of erection on Elm street and will cost upwards of $25,000, including land. The uniformed members of the department and a ladder truck are depicted in front of the Fire Department.An historic location, formerly, the site housed the tavern where the new town was planned, the Freeman blacksmith shop, the ancient elm tree planted by Mrs Freeman returning from horse riding, from a switch or sapling elm she had used as a whip.

- – Southeast section of the Alden Block, Globe Village, providing detail of the brick facade enhanced by stone. Sign over the door reads: Furniture Ware Rooms. Under the windows there is more signage for Picture Frames, Furniture&Bedding, Ware Rooms. Samples of the inventory such as wagons are out front. Two granite steps lead into the interior where a glimpse of a stairwell is provided through an open doorway. A hitching post with a horse's head is directly in front of the entrance to the store. Two retractable striped awnings are placed on each window of the shop front. A man with a hat and gauntlet like sleeve protectors, suggesting a store clerk, is standing in front of the business. A barn is located in the rear, to the right of the scene.

Town Hall, Elm Street Congregational Church and Hartwell Residence Southbridge
- – Looking in a southwesterly direction on Elm Street, a view of the side of Town Hall with its tower, balcony, chimneys, and arches is given. The Town Hall is a Romanesque Revival style municipal building, built in 1888. The foundation and exterior staircase is granite with brick facade and some terra cotta relief. Until 1927, the High School was house in Town Hall. Horse and carriage is standing in front of the main entrance on the unpaved street, attached to one of the many hitching posts lining the street. The Elm Street Congregational Church is the next building going south on Elm Street. During the hurricane on September 21, 1938, the steeple was razed. This religious group was organized in Southbridge on September 16, 1801. A wooden colonial style structure was first built on this site in 1821. - – Easterly view of Main Street Southbridge circa 1907. The Central Baptist Church to the left, building began in 1864 and the doors opened June 11, 1866. This church replaced the one in the Ammidown block that was destroyed in the fire of November 14, 1863. Architect for this project was Samuel Thayer of Boston. On this site in 1801, the Poll Parish was established. The future site of the Jacob Edwards Library is located where the wooden viewing stand is placed. Residences of various architectural styles are in the background. Tram tracks for Southbridge Sturbridge Street Railway are in evidence on the unpaved foreground. Edwards Block Main Street Southbridge
- – View of the south side of Main Street, featuring the Edwards Block, in Centre Village, Southbridge. The Edwards Company, a dry goods, carpets, clothing and furnishings store was started by Jacob Edwards (for whom Jacob Edwards Library is named) and his brothers, John and William Edwards. Reputedly, this is the oldest department store in the United States. The claim was also made that the building was the first one in Southbridge to have an elevator. Previously, Calvin D. Paige (C.D. Paige&Co.) operated a similar company from this premises, 120 Main Street; as did Richard Macallister (Edwards&Macallister). Detail of the architectural features such as the dentil, brick work, arched and square windows and chimneys is provided in this image. Signs for other businesses operating from this block: Lochi Tailoring is on the second floor of the Edwards building. Another sign announces Southbridge Coal Co. offering coal, wood and cement. Southbridge Savings Bank and Southbridge National Bank
- – Constructed of brick with brownstone trimmings, located on Main Street, the Southbridge Savings and the Southbridge National Banks are adjacent to the YMCA building (razed January 3, 1975). The Southbridge Savings Bank was incorporated April 23, 1848. The building has two arched windows on the first floor and a large arch overhead. There are chimneys and a balcony depicted. The corner of the Columbian block situated on the Elm and Main Street is on the right. A water trough with light fixture is viewed in the middle of the street, where a horse is drinking. The Southbridge National Bank was originally organized June 7, 1836, when ten of the most prominent town citizens met in the sitting room of William Healey's Tavern: Bela Tiffany, Ebenezer D. Masonic Building and Ammidown Block Southbridge
- – The Ammidown block was the first commercial center in Southbridge. It was also known as the Library block, as it housed the Southbridge Library for thirty years, (in the Ammidown building), prior to the establishment of the Jacob Edwards Library (1914), on the next block east. More recently, the building housed Langevin Jewelers, Ben Bousquet Realty and Appraisers and others. In the early 2000s, the Savers Bank (previously known as the Savers Co-Operative Bank) bought the building and restored and renovated it . Savers Co-Operative Bank was organized in the spring of 1910 with assets of $11,098.12 to $8,430,000.00 in 1960, according to the Southbridge Evening News, April 27, 1960. Previously the bank was located at 15 Elm Street adjacent to the YMCA building. In 1960, the bank proudly advertised that"services have been expanded to include register checks, travelers checks, vacation, tax and Christmas clubs, home improvement loans for present mortgagors of the bank, share loans up to 95% of cash value, and 3% quarterly dividends on savings accounts."Masonic, MACI or C.A. Dresser House building on the left, located at the corner of Central and Main Streets. Both buildings are constructed of brick with stone detail, having dormers in the mansard roofs. The next building is the Boston Branch which is a one story building that acts as a connector to the Ammidown building (1871). The buildings typify the Victorian period. The sides of both tall buildings are visible. Sign for"Boston Branch House Furnishings","J.C. Gabree House furnishings&Hardware"and"E.M. Phillips&Son Insurance R.M. Burnham"attached to the building. Retractable striped awnings in evidence. Peter Grant&Co. (Grocers, 84 Main Street) is printed onto the awning in front of the Boston Branch.

The store has two large windows on the first floor to display its wares. The door to the store has two openings as was typical in the Victorian era. Six men are standing outside the building, one of them a uniformed police officer, another sporting a bowtie, one in a work outfit of dungarees, the others are formally dressed, all wearing hats. C.A. Dresser House and Ammidown Block Southbridge
- – Located on the corner of Main and Central streets, the C. A. Dresser House, 92 Main Street, has a magnificent presence. The brick structure with stone relief is similar to the adjacent Ammidown building except for the ornamental central tower. The C. A. Dresser House was a hotel. An interesting view of the west side of the building and some domestic dwellings, is provided. Awnings cover the first floor windows in the front of the building. On the right side there is a horse drawn carriage. A side view of the Ammidown building is given. A sign on the side of the Ammidown building reads"Cummings&Conant Hardware, Stoves, Agricultural Tools, Paints, Oils&Glass"(Edwin B. Cummings and H. J. Conant.) Trees line this northerly section of Main Street.

Elm Street Congregational Church and Samuel Hartwell Residence Southbridge
- – Tree lined Elm Street, Southbridge. Offers a view of the new Elm Street Congregational Church, the second one built, in 1885, located on the corner of Elm and Park streets. The first church was a wooden colonial style structure, built in 1821. A clear view of the steeple and ornamental tower is shown. During the hurricane on September 21, 1938 the steeple was razed. This religious group was organized in Southbridge on September 16, 1801. The Victorian residence of Samuel Hartwell, Apothecary and his wife, Ellen M. Hartwell is on the right. The Queen Ann style house has a commanding view of Main street. On the left, is a corner of the old Town Hall which is lined by a picket fence and decorative metal bollards run parallel to the side walk. The subsequent Romanesque Revival style Town Hall building was built in 1888. The architect for the Town Hall was A.P. Cutting of Worcester.

School Street School Southbridge
- – The three story building is shown from the side, with a view of the brick foundation and the clapboard siding. All the windows on the first and second floors are six over six. The windows in the brick area have a stone lintel above and below each opening. A metal fire escape is on view at the side of the tall chimney stack. School Street had four schools, according to the Price, Lee&Co. Directory of Webster&Southbridge, 1877-8. School Street Primary, No. 1, where Miss E. Etta Whitford was teacher; School Street Primary No. 2, where Miss A. R. Rowley was teacher;School Street Intermediate School where Miss I. M. Converse was teacher; School Street Grammar, where Miss. J. V. Harwood was teacher.School Street is a registered historic district.

Blanchard building Southbridge 1920
- – Blanchard building located on the corner of Main and Elm streets. The Strand Theatre, operated by the Blanchard Brothers, was housed in this building. Cinema posters are pasted onto the side wall. This was the site of a few fires over the years - one notable one in 1927. An interesting ingress to the building via a covered stairs is shown. Ten chimney stacks are on view atop the building. Note the"Berry Cigar Indian"in front of the store. A horse drawn wagon with stacked wood is parked at the curb. There is a sign advertising a restaurant in the building. Many electricity poles on view. A glimpse of Central Street is provided on the right.

The Pines Southbridge residence of Ebenezer Ammidown and the Dresser family
- – Located on Main Street near the Oak Ridge cemetery, The Pines was built by Ebenezer Ammidown. Later this building became the residence of the Dresser Family. View is provided of the barn, in the rear. Detail given of the porch and dormer style accommodation on the third floor, where there is a widow's walk. Formal entrance with pillar and gate at the end of the driveway. Glimpse of the stone wall of the Oak Ridge cemetery is on the right.
