description- – Image shows the Hockanum Ferry having just landed on the Northampton side of the Connecticut River after transporting a horse-drawn wagon filled with a large load of hay. Sitting atop the hay, according to the inscription on the back of the photograph, is Uncle Sam Russell. There are a couple of skiffs floating beside the ferry, and the ferryman is pushing the edge of the ferry with a pole to make a better landing for the wagonload of hay.
