Rolling Dam

  • – Rolling Dam also called Roaring Dam was built by town resident Daniel Simmons in 1886. The Blackstone Manufacturing Co. wanted a new dam to replace an old earthen dam that formed a reservoir. This reservoir supplied the mill with water. Located at the end of County Street in Blackstone just above the river gorge.

Holyoke Wooden Dam from Howard St., Holyoke Massachusetts

  • – Image of Holyoke?s wooden dam, the first successful structure to harness the Connecticut River for its power-generating potential. Built in 1849, it was replaced by the current stone dam in 1900. In the foreground the water of the Connecticut River cascades over the dam creating hydroelectric power for the city of Holyoke. To the right of the dam is a view of Howard Street, located in the Highlands neighborhood of Holyoke. In the background is a misty view of Mount Tom.

On the left isa cluster of buildings which was the Belcher and Taylor Agricultural Tool Company. After the Civil War they supplied agriculturalimplements for the settlement of the American West.
