Centennial Parade and Celebrations in Southbridge Massachusetts at Foster Street
description- – In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Southbridge, a three-day celebration was held - July 2, 3 and 4, 1916. The President of the Executive Committee was Hon. Calvin D. Paige. The dedication of Notre Dame Church was the first event on the program. The brochure also announced that Town Hall would feature"An exhibition of articles of historic interest and a comparative exhibition of some manufacturing methods and products of 1816 and 1916 will be shown."The buildings depicted are festooned with buntings and flags. A view of the Central Baptist Church, offering rest room facilities and the Jacob Edwards Library at the corner of Main and Fosters streets, is provided. A footman in a uniform precedes the Woman's Club float, which has four horses pulling the attractive wooden structure decorated with greenery. Followed on by The Girls Club with two horseback riders and ladies marching in the rear. A glimpse of the trolley tracks are given in the foreground. The Main Street is crowded with onlookers for the parade.

Musicians in fancy dress at the Centennial Parade and Celebrations in Southbridge Massachusetts
description- – Southbridge during the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Southbridge, a three-day celebration, held on July 2, 3 and 4, 1916. The musicians are seated on a horse drawn wagon, with hay and canvas. A trombone and drum are depicted. A duplex structure with porches on the front and side of the building, and a bulkhead to the cellar, are on view. There are shutters on the windows. Onlookers are on the porch. For the celebration, the President of the Executive Committee was Hon. Calvin D. Paige. According to the program, the Children's Parade was on Monday, July Third at 8 a.m. and the Civic Parade was on Tuesday, July Fourth at 9 a.m.

Civil War Soldier in Uniform Southbridge Massachusetts
description- – A young union soldier from the civil war shown in full uniform, including gun and canteen. He is shown in a garden, standing in the grass in front of a tree. Southbridge's population at the beginning of the civil war was approximately 3,700 citizens. Four hundred men were mustered from Southbridge. That was nineteen more than its quota, according to the Centennial Anniversary of Southbridge. The cost of the war to the town in money raised directly for this purpose was almost $34,000. A monument was erected in front of Town Hall to commemorate the patriotism of the soldiers. The inscription reads"To the men of - Southbridge - who served their country - in the war - for the preservation - of the union - 1861-1865 - erected by the town - of Southbridge - A.D. 1914". Noted on the stone as well, John Tanner of Southbridge, a member of the 54th Regiment, was killed on July 13, 1864, indicating that Southbridge had a member in Col. Robert Gould Shaw's regiment, immortalized in the movie Glory.

description- – Woman in graceful motion in the foreground, possibly participating in a ball game. During the three-day centennial celebrations in Southbridge, there were two ball games scheduled, one at 3.15 p.m., on July 3rd - American Optical vs. Marlboro and the other on July 4th at 3.30 p.m., when the American Optical were playing Putnam, Ct. Both games were played at the Wellsworth Field. Groups of children are shown in groups. The adults are in the background. J. Frank Morrissey was responsible for the sports and fireworks, according to the program.

Horse-drawn float with driver and two colonial re-enactors, are on view. The man is dressed as a Puritan with the distinctive hat with buckle and the black suit with split white collar. The woman is seated at a spinning wheel. She has a head covering and an apron worn cris-crossed. The wagon is covered with yew clippings and decorations. Mr. Michael P. O'Shaughnessy is in charge of the parade, according to the centennial program. Massachusetts Governor McCall attended the celebrations on Tuesday, July 4th and was scheduled to speak at 1 p.m. A house with a mansard roof is in the background. A glimpse of a cupola is also provided.

The Armory at the corner of Hook and Central streets Southbridge Massachusetts
description- – The Armory in Southbridge at the corner of Central and Hook streets is on view. The building is constructed of brick. A grand keystone arch with two towers and crenellations are the dominant features of the structure. Steps lead from Central Street through the arch. A flag of the United States flies from the side of the building. Some pedestrians are on the left, one pushing a bicycle. One of the houses in the Twinehurst development by American Optical Company is on the right, near the Central Street bridge. There are electricity poles and wires in evidence. On the other corner of Hook Street, stands a three-story house. This area of Southbridge is known as The Flats.

Men Golfing at Cohasse Golf Club Southbridge Massachusetts
description- – A group of four men are shown playing golf, with a child acting as caddy, looking on. All wear hats or caps. A stone wall bisects the image, where a hill is shown in the background. According to the Southbridge Historical Album 1816-1966 Sesquicentennial"The history of golf in Southbridge tells the story of Cohasse Country Club and dates back to August 16, 1900, when a golfing club was organized by Dr. F.W. Edwards, J.F. Leonard, Ernest Laycock, A.M.Chesley, J.E. Pfieffer, R.D. Rice, and George F. Horter. The original course was on the Roger Lawson estate adjacent to Sandersdale and was leased for $50.00 a year (caddy fees were ten cents a round) until 1911, when the land was sold for building purposes. The club was inactive while various attempts were made to secure other property, but not until 1916 did a definite plan evolve. Channing, Albert, and Cheney Wells asked Donald J. Ross, famed golf course authority, to evaluate construction of a course on the grounds of beautiful Cohasse Farm. On the strength of Mr. Ross' recommendation, the three Wells brothers decided to build a course and started work at once. The caretaker's dwelling became a clubhouse, the powerhouse by the dam was fitted up as the first locker house, and six holes opened for play. Cohasse Country Club was born on July 18, 1918 with an eleven-man board of governors and with Channing M. Wells as president; E. Benjamin Armstrong, vice-president; and Raymond M. Burnham, treasurer. On May 13, 1936, the firmly established Club became a corporation."

Ladies of the Jacob Edwards Library Southbridge Massachusetts 1916
description- – Four staff members of the Jacob Edwards Library shown leaning against the decorative wrought iron railing, standing on the stone steps, in 1916. The ladies are wearing light colored clothing - long skirts and blouses with their hair swept up. The staff at the library were Ella E. Miersch, Librarian; assisted by Mabel W. Plimpton and Ruth Beecher, as noted in the Annual Report of 1917. The Town of Southbridge appropriation, in 1916, was $5,000; the library was open for a total of 307 days and circulated 48,384 volumes.In advance of its construction, The Southbridge Press, Saturday, July 2, 1904 commented on the library as follows:"Through the generosity of Jacob Edwards, a native of Southbridge who became one of the merchant princes of the country, the town is to have a magnificent library building, one which will be in keeping with the many other splendid edifices that adorn the town. Mr. Edwards' has given $50,000 for the purpose exclusive of the site, and as soon as a suitable location is selected the work of erecting the building will begin. Mr. Edwards' benefaction is regarded with the highest appreciation by the citizens of the town, and they will feel proud of the splendid building which is to be erected."

The women have their hair swept up and their necks are adorned with chokers. All wear full length clothing. Flags fly from the back of the vehicle. The whip is next to the driver in its holder.
