Page 3 of Student Handbook

description
  • – This is the verso of the title page and the third page of the student handbook.
  • – "THE Student Government Association sends a hearty greeting of welcome to the entering students. We are very glad that you are going to be one of us, to work and play with us and be good friends. From past experience we are sure that you want to know how things are run at Simmons, and what different social activities there are; so we have gathered together thematerial in this little handbook for your edification and use. The first few weeks there is more or less entertaining to make you feel at home, and to help you to become acquainted with as many as possible of the old and the new students. It is not necessary to await formalities. If you see someone whom you should like to know, go up to her and make friends with her. If youwill go half way you need not fear that she will not respond and come the other half. Early in the fall, the Freshman Class is called together by the president of Student Government. Temporary officers are elected under the supervision of the president of the Junior Class. When the class has fully decided whom it wishes for permanent officers another meeting is called, and these are elected. The colors of the class of 1921 are pink and white. The college graduates also organize. The Institutional Management Class organized for the first time in 1916-17. The Freshman frolic comes late in the spring. It is the last opportunity given the Freshmen to live up to their name. The college is happily situated within easy 3"

Pages 4 and 5 of Student Handbook

description
  • – These are the fourth and fifth pages of the student handbook.
  • – "access of the good plays, concerts, lectures, and exhibitions, which are so numerous in Boston. In relation to the present situation, Simmons is actively engaged in all its branches. There will be many opportunities for "war work" while carrying on your college course. Do not neglect your studies, however, for other activities. You have come to college towork. Remember that work and play in a happy combination will bring you success and many friends. Below is a brief account of our college organizations. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION Government of the students, by the students, and for the students--that is what Student Government means at Simmons. As soon as one becomes a student here, be she day girl or dormitory, she belongs to the organization. Five meetings are held annually. We are all expected to attend, make suggestions, ask questions, and vote. To administer affairs we have the Student Council, consisting of class president and vice-presidents, presidents of all associations, and chairmen of college boards. Student Government cares for our Honor System and our BulletinBoards, and various other things of a more or less technical nature about the college. The Student Government treasurer is to handle all the moneys of all organizations. The president for 1917-18 is Dorothy Blood, '18. Under the supervision of the Student 4 Government is the Dormitory Government which makes all rules governing girls in the dormitories, such as light rules, quiet rules, etc. Officers for 1917-18 are: President, Sylvia Wallace, '18 Vice-President, Rae Finsterwald, '19 Secretary, Katherine Rock, '19 Treasurer, Elnora Blanchard, '20 Finally, lest you think that Student Government does nothing but make rules, we must tell you of Student Government festivities, at which times we are just as strenuous at play as we have been atwork. There are big parties, one in the fall to welcome all incoming students, and one in the spring when the next year's elections are announced. In addition, Hallowe'en, Christmas, and Washington's Birthday mean other good times. Remember that as students at Simmons you are all active members of Student Government and are therefore called upon to help others as well asyourselves to be "strong and pure and just." Y. W. C. A. The Y. W. C. A. is one of the organizations which all students should join, immediately upon entering college. As a member of it you feel more closely bound to the great international organization which is doing so much for girls in the United States and elsewhere. Our purpose, to deepen the Christlife within thecollege, is one which every student will be glad to further. Weekly devotional meetings, lasting half an hour, 5"
