Clarendon Mills and pond
- – View along East Main Street, across the Clarendon Mill pond, towards the Clarendon Mill complex. The mill pond was built byMajor Ezra Beaman in 1794 by diverting the waters of the Nashua River through a half-mile canal to provide water power to his mills. The millpond was doubled in size in 1847. The earliest mill on the site was a grist mill operated by Ezra Beaman. In 1819 the mill was converted to acotton mill and operated as the Beaman Manufacturing Company with machinery installed by special arrangement with Samuel Slater of Pawtucket,Rhode Island. Clarendon Mills was one of six mills in West Boylston to manufacture cotton. In 1895 the mill was equipped with 10,950 spindles andemployed 195 operatives. There is an unknown man next to a bicycle standing in front of the mill pond fence.

Road to French Hill and Clarendon Mills

Note the clearing and drainage of the mill pond as the construction of the Wachusett Reservoir progressed. The ridge tothe left of the image was the location of mill tenement buildings for workers of the Clarendon Mills. Circa 1895-1905.

Brick Church (Congregational)
- – View across the Common from East Main Street. In the middle of the image is the First Congregational Church known as the BrickChurch built in 1832. At the far left of the image is Thomas Hall, named for Town benefactor, Robert B. Thomas the founder of the Old Farmer'sAlmanac. Town meetings were held in this building from the 1840's to 1900. Thomas Hall was also the location of the first high school. To therear of Thomas Hall are the carriage barns for both the church and the hall. Circa 1895-1905.

Cowee, and the Cowee Bridge over which passes Holbrook Street and under which passes the South Branch of the NashuaRiver. The land in the foreground has been cleared making way for the construction of the Wachusett Reservoir. In the middle of the image are thehomes of George Hildreth (at the corner of the road leading to Oakdale) and then further on that road George Reed's organ shop and house. Remains of the Holbrook Mill

The Holbrook Mill, owned by Eli W. Holbrook, Oliver Eldridge, and Linus M. Harris, milled cottonsheeting and employed fifty hands. This area of the town was called Central Village. The image shows the Nashua flowing over the dam atCowee's Mill and under Holbrook Street and the Cowee Bridge.
