L'amour a l'arc [art original]
- – The metal (possibly zinc alloy) statue is of "L'amour a l'arc" ("love with a bow", i.e Eros or Cupid). Information on the sculpture is limited, but a plaque on the base says it was done "Par Aurilli (Beaux Arts 1902)". There is also the name "R Aurili" (with one L) and the word "France" cast into the base of the statue. The artist seems to be Richard (or Ricardo) Aurili, an Italian sculptor born in 1834, who may very well have been a student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, although we cannot confirm this. He did apparently exhibit at the Salon des Artistes in Paris in 1893, 1894, and 1896. The statue was given to James Keough in 1903. The statue, which shows a winged Eros drawing a bow (there was originally an arrow which is now missing) is approximately 31.5 inches tall, including the marble base. It is not known how many copies were made of the statue, but there is a record of one selling at Sotheby's in England in 1998 for $5,734 USD. Major Keough was one of the nation's, and indeed the world's most outstanding marksmen in his day. He died in Wakefield on January 31, 1946 at the age of 82. He was the holder of several world records for marksmanship, and served in the Richardson Light Guard, the Spanish-American War, and was one of the founders of the Reading Rifle and Revolver Club. After his death the library received two display cases of Keough's trophies and awards. With the exception of the Eros statue, all of those other awards are now in the possession of the Wakefield Historical Society.

- – "HISTORY OF THE LIBRARY OF THE TOWN OF WAKEFIELD - Painted by Hope McCloskey Dillaway in 1970 - The old Ecclesiastical Library was at first kept in the parsonage of Rev. Reuben Emerson (1) and later in the rear store area of the Homestead (2) on the north corner of Main and Salem Streets, which belonged to Lilley Eaton II (3). There also were housed the later Social, Franklin, Phrenological, and Mechanics Libraries, each of which was promoted by various town leaders, among whom were Franklin Poole (4), and one who served as librarian, Abel F. Hutchinson (5). Two who had an interest in promoting an Agricultural Library were James Eustis (6) and Samuel Kingman (7). Then in accordance with the new Massachusetts edict in 1856, the Town Public Library was organized, located on the first floor of the Old Town House (8) on Church Street where it crossed what is now the Common. This location served well until conditions became crowded. So in 1872 the Library was again moved, this time to a section of the first floor of the new building, the 1868 Town Hall (9), a gift to the town from Cyrus Wakefield (10). Among the hardworking citizens who made up the original committee to establish the Town Library were Benjamin F. Tweed (11), James Oliver (12), George O. Carpenter (13), and Lilley Eaton III (14). Several also served on the first Boards of Trustees, as did Edward Mansfield (15), upon the site of whose home was later to be erected that which fulfilled the ultimate dream, a special library building made possibly largely by the generosity of friends, and given the name of The Lucius Beebe Memorial Library (16) to commemorate the services and generosity of that member of the original Board of Trustees, Lucius Beebe (17). Others working with him in the same capacity will also be long remembered: James M. Evans (18), Ebenezer Wiley (19), Paul H. Sweetser (20), and John S. Eaton (21)." -- Text from back of painting.

- – "REPORT OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES - On May 30, the whole community was shocked by the tragic death of Mr. J. Oliver Beebe. Mr. Beebe had been a member of the Board since 1920, and since 1924 had served as chairman. The following appreciation was sent by the Trustees to the members of his family , to the Daily Item, and was spread upon the records: 'The Trustees of the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library wish to express to the family and friends of Mr. J. Oliver Beebe their sincere appreciation of his services as a member of the board. Coming to the board as one of the youngest members who ever had served, he brought from the first an enthusiastic concentration on all matters pertaining to the Library. As the years went by and his business cares increased, no lessening of his interest in Library affairs was evident. He was notably faithful in his attendance, serving first as a member and then for nine years as chairman of the Board, bringing always to the meetings a stimulating buoyancy. His grasp of all practical matters was remarkable in its swiftness and acumen. In every way he showed a fairness of spirit and a desire to perpetuate the finest traditions of the Beebe family.' A few weeks later in a joint session of Selectmen and Trustees, Mr. Albert W. Rockwood was elected to fill out the year of Mr. Beebe's service. Almost at the same hour of this meeting another vacancy on the Board occurred through the death of Mr. Edson W. White. This second loss in so short a time was felt keenly by every member of the Board. The following appreciation was sent to Mrs. White, to the Daily Item, and was spread upon the records: 'The Trustees of the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library wish to express to the family and friends of Mr. Edson W. White their sincere appreciation of his services as a member of the Board. The genial, whimsical humor, the staunchness, the unbiased judgment which he brought to Library problems were qualities which endeared him to those with whom he was associated. Mr. White's service to the town lasting through a period of thirty-three years, demonstrates a life of devotion to the best interests of his community.' In October at a joint session of Trustees abd Selectmen, Mr. Walter Hickey was elected to fill out the year of Mr. White's term. In September the Board received a letter from Mr. and Mrs. Junius Beebe announcing a gift of $5000 to establish a Library Fund in the name of their son Oliver. In accordance with a wish previously expressed by Mr. Oliver Beebe, the income of the Fund is to be used for general purposes peculiar to the Library but for which the town might be reluctant to pay. Mr. and Mrs. Beebe also have given a fine picture of their son, which has been hung in the Trustees' Room, and at Christmas they gave the beautiful decorations of the library in his memory." - Text from the Annual Report, Town of Wakefield, Mass., 1933, p.141-142, affixed to back of photograph.
