Thoms Childs Shoe Store

description
  • – Image of Childs? Shoe Store at 273-79 High Street. Childs? Shoe Store was owned and operated by Thomas Childs, pictured in the foreground of this image waiting on a gentleman in a bowler. Two floor-to-ceiling shelves that are filled with shoes dominate this image. Tall ladders lean against the shelves and baskets connected to pulleys hang beside each ladder. These baskets are most likely designed to allow the salesman to safely remove boxes of shoes from the highest shelves. The salesman most likely would put the shoebox into the basket, climb down the ladder, lower the basked and then retrieve the shoes. An oversized boot can be seen over the door. Displays of umbrellas, shoes, and ladies hosiery can be seen throughout the room. Several customers are being waited on, all of whom are wearing Edwardian clothes.

Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co.

description
  • – Image of the exterior of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company at 335 Main Street. One of America?s oldest chains, A and Ps were found throughout Holyoke starting in 1898. This photograph was taken around 1931 when the Main Street store opened. The storefront windows and area surrounding the entrance to the grocery are filled with fruits and vegetables of all varieties. The exterior displays are arranged in wire baskets and a wooden bin. The windows are also plastered with advertisements for many household goods. Built in 1911, the architectural elements of this building are indicative of the neo-classic period. This is especially true of the curvaceous engaged columns surrounding the storefront windows, the Grecian key mosaic on the stoop, and the elegant details surrounding the front door. Its awnings have been folded in, perhaps to allow the viewer to clearly see the advertisements. Also visible is the storefront for Breault and Co. Men?s Wear. A man in a straw hat, vest and tie stands in front of this door.

William Skinner Silk Mill

description
  • – Image of the William Skinner Silk Mill. Formally located at Appleton Street and the First Level Canal this building sat at the current site of Heritage State Park in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The William Skinner Silk Mill was well known for its silk and satin production. This image shows a clear view of the U-shaped Skinner complex. While the architecture is for the most part plain, examples of denticulated corbels can clearly be seen on the cornice of the tower containing one of the main staircases of the factory. Before plans to refurbish this building were completed, the Skinner factory burned to the ground in 1980.

Parsons' Paper Company Mill #2

description
  • – Image of Parsons Paper Company, Mill Number 2. Parsons Paper Mill, Holyoke?s longest running Paper Company, was in operation from 1853 to 2005. Parsons Mill produced paper for specialty paper firms. Their products included fine writing paper, safety paper used in making checks, and high quality art and resume paper. Even while most firms switched to creating pulp paper, Parsons continued the tradition of creating paper with cotton rags. It even included its own rag room, an anomaly during a time when most received their rags from southern companies. The mill building found in this drawing is Parsons Paper Company #2. This building was purchased in 1888 from Holyoke Water Power Company and was found on Sargeant Street. The drawing shows the buildings? placement between the First and Second Level Canals. One can also see the tracks for the Holyoke and Westfield line. The architecture of this building is typical of 19th century mill construction with its W shaped layout and plain facade.
