Lee's Shoe Factory, Athol, Mass.

  • – Lee Brothers Shoe Company began in 1850. The company moved to the white wood building at the corner of Main and Exchange Streets, left, in 1858. Expansion to company buildings continued and ended with the brick building, shown, in 1910.

  • – View of Union Twist Drill Company, Athol's second largest industry by 1930. Started by a group of business men in 1905 with the manufacturing of metal cutting tools. The business continued to operate until the mid 1980's. In the foreground is the Chestnut Hill Ave. railroad bridge.

Bank Block, Athol, Mass

description
  • – View of the Bank block built in 1888. Located t the corner of Main and Exchange Streets, it house the Millers River National Bank which became the First National Bank years later. A fire in 1913 seriously damaged the ornate top of the building which was rebuilt with a flat roof. Behind it is the original bank building and the Academy of Music.

Trolley Car Runs Wild

  • – This photo shows the front of Cass Garage, at the bottom of School St. hill after being hit by a Street Railway Car. The driver lost control at the top of School St. and careened into the building, October 20, 1921, 10:30 p.m. This area was considered one of the worst places in Massachusetts for trolley travel.
